Age of Decadence
If by any chance you already played to Blackguards, a turn based rpg as well… You might feel at home !
Why ? because Blackguards was fucking hard ! And Age of Decadence is also hard but in its own way… There are many endings and you can survive the whole game without too many fights. The devs are even warning you with a little message at the very beginning, saying that’s it’s not going to be like your usual RPG killing enemies by the thousands.
And that was true at the start… But ultimately i ended the game as a killing machine. Though for two fights… (warning little spoils ahead) first the Widowmaker in the arena, i had to use the crossbow to knock him down several times, couldn’t get the upper hand at melee… And secondly the tower guardian where i had to use a trick with the nearby stairs…
High Replay-ability and count 40+ hours each time
I am not the kind of player to replay a whole game from the beginning if i finish it… But you have to know that the strength of Age of Decadence, is that you can replay it choosing a different path, a different faction… and even the missions will be different. Personally i went the Assassin’s way ^_^
Well… even if we can finish the game the peaceful way, i was scared i could end in a situation where my battle skills would be required… maybe you already experienced that ? You create a guy skilled in social skills, and at one moment there’s one fight you can’t overcome because you lack some fighting skills ! Sorry but as i said i don’t have time to replay from the beginning and do another character.
In fact i did so after reading some comments from players who ended stuck on some fights ! Age of Decadence is described as a hardcore experience… though as i am myself a Veteran of rpgs, i didn’t find it hardcore but yes it’s an old school game ! Meaning… Don’t spread your experience too much, and try to specialize as much as you can !
Let’s put some screenshots !
As i said above… Don’t learn too many fighting skills, not worth it ! Myself it was the Two handed Axe for melee, the crossbow for range and the dodge for defense and nothing else ! The two handed axe because it could inflict greater damage in melee as well as giving a bonus to counter attack, the crossbow as it had a chance to knockdown on every hits ! Meaning free hits when the enemy is on the ground, and finally the dodge as it gives a good chance to Counter Attack each time you’re attacked… and that means Free Hits !
Like that you can keep spare points for…
Lockpicking, Sneaking and Stealing ! 🙂
These 3 skills are very important ! In every towns there is an Inn where you can have your permanent room… and in every inns there are other customers in their own private chamber. Lock-picking allows you to open their door, Sneak in with the sound of a cat, and steal their belongings of course !
But the most interesting part is… You gain One Civil experience point everytime you use successfully one of these skills ! These experience points will have to be spent on Non-combat abilities, but it’s an Awesome way to make a good use of these skills and to win a LOT of free point ! In fact most of my points in CIVIL experience, like Lore or Crafting… were made by sneaking into houses and stealing the valuables.
I remember having made more than 20 points in just one Inn !
Let’s put some screenshots !
I have to say that the game was highly addictive during the first 30 hours… and a little less for the 10 last.
The first town where you appear is full of little things to do… Climbing a wall to enter a house by the roof, entering another via an open window… If you’re the sneaky type there are Many occasions to make a good use of these skills, and the game itself becomes much more interesting ! Also as you just begin the game there are fights you can’t do yet… So take your time and explore the rest of the of town… Do the things you can do and then come back when you’re stronger !
…Or when you found out you could poison and sharpen your weapons 😉
But as you’ll explore the rest of the wasteland…
It looked to me that the devs had put all their sneaky good ideas in the starting city of Teron, and then… these ideas faded a little ! I looked in the other cities for ways to lock pick house doors, open windows… climb walls… no i don’t remember having done it after the first city. Of course there were other interesting things to do… but i would have liked to use my thief abilities a little more than in the Inns, or stealing from merchants in the streets.
So that’s also where i began to fight in the Arena of the second city, and to put more and more points in my fighting skills and Alchemy, because creating poison is very useful in battle ! It saved my life many times… There are MANY fights in the Arena… And i spent hours there lol ! It’s also a good way to test new weapons or tactics, and you can take all the stuff from your dead enemies. On this point… i have to say that i have spent points in Crafting skill, but it only helped me to win some skills check during some discussions or situations, because you can find Very good stuff in the Arena… and you’ll never need to craft anything !
Even my best endgame gear was found on the hardest enemy of the Arena…
Let’s put some last screenshots !
Age of Decadence was a good little game ! And if like me you were looking for another turned based rpg to chew, it’s a good choice ! Just make sure you specialize whatever the person you want to play, don’t make the mistake of creating a Jack of All Trades. You know the sentence no ? Jack of all Trades… Master of none ! And you need mastery in AOD !
Personally I have never been stuck in the game… Because i wasn’t spending all my points right away, i kept them in store… just in case i would have stumbled on a situation needing some experience investment. And it happened 3 or 4 times ! And like for thieves abilities… before spending points in them, i calculated first how much free points i could get out from this investment… Like if you spend 15 points to raise a sneaking or stealing skill, do that only if you know you can steal and sneak from 5 people !
Like that you know it’s a good investment.
And much the same for all the other skills… invest only if you think it’s going to unlock parts of the game.
Also the Iron Towers Studio have created a Dungeon Crawler based on Age of Decadence ! It’s called Dungeon Rats, it’s harder than AOD and even frustrating when you begin it for the first time 😉 But anyway… it’s a great old school RPG ! Also… Keep an eye out for this studio in 2018, as they’re developing a Science Fiction RPG too called Colony Ship.
The difficulty i played on : None to choose, it’s old school.
How long is this game : 40+ hours
Would i recommend it to a friend ? : Yes if he likes the Blackguards genre.
Did i pay for it ? : No… Pirate Bay.
