Dark Souls 3 Review
And concerning Dark Souls 2… It was even more beautiful but not as interesting as the 1st Episode. Got lost in Dark Souls 2… had to check the Wiki from time to time ! And when i was going from one place to another, it wasn’t looking as part of the same country, but more like another world in another galaxy lol… so for me i had the feeling that there were absolutely no connections between the places i was exploring…
And that’s why i ADORED Dark Souls 3 !
Everything looked connected !
Like in Dark Souls the first, where you knew there was a citadel there… but couldn’t enter it yet, you knew there were some mysteries to uncover just behind that door, but it was out of your grasp for the moment. That feeling that everything was part of the same plot, that i didn’t felt in Dark Souls 2, was back in the 3rd episode ! In Dark Souls 3 i knew exactly what to do, even if the path was sometimes leading me astray from my goals, i knew there was something to do below… in order to access the upper levels !
Let’s put some screenshots !
Harder, more Nervous and simply better !
In Dark Souls the first episode… apart from the very last boss and the DLC boss, the game wasn’t pushing me against the wall, meaning i could achieve every battles just by blocking with a big shield, as rolling was an option and not something you had to learn well in order to survive.
In Dark Souls 2 some bosses were a little more nervous ! But some others were really easy… i remember having killed a few of them on first try, which is generally strange in a Dark Soul to succeed against a new boss… even more if you’re a casual player like me ! It meant that without any strategy you could win, just by bashing hard with a Big Club ! (i know i did it lol…)
In Dark Souls 3 i felt the pain and the nervousness right from the start ! Even the easiest opponents were acting faster, running towards you and if you were hesitating a little too much, you were dead in no time. But i think it was the first Boss who made me understand how Dark Souls 3 was going to treat me ! As always i began as a Deprived, meaning the hardest way to begin the game…
But against this First Boss it was a PAIN !
Nothing comparable to the first Boss of Dark Souls… this Big Demon that you could easily kill even as a Deprived ! No this time it was like What the Fuck ! because i think i died at least 10 or 15 times ! (if not 20 lol ?) But in the end it’s a good thing, because it clearly gives you a good view of how the game is going to be with you ! In Dark Souls III, a boss battle is a boss battle ! You have to focus on what you’re doing, you have to react fast and not one half-second too late or it’s over for you !
Clearly… the devs wanted you to play Serious this time.
Let’s put some more screenshots !
A good way to learn is to try over and over…
From time to time i was using a little cheat in Dark Souls, and even more in Dark Souls 2 !
What was it ? Well on PC you can Alt-Tab the game at any moment, in order to copy paste the savegame file in another directory. (click here to learn this trick as it works in DS3 too) Doing that, even if you die 1 minute later you’ll be able to retrieve your character exactly how he was 1 minute ago, and so loosing only minimum experience.
But i was doing that because in Dark Souls 1 or 2… the game never pushed me hard right from the start ! The game never forced me to learn how to roll precisely… because this little cheat is of course not working in boss battles, and when the game is so hard with you… that you have to learn the game mechanics very well in order to advance !
Well… this little cheat became useless as it’s like i was becoming more confident in myself.
In fact i only used this Alt-Tab 1 or 2 times in the entire Dark Souls 3 ! No more cheats, i learned the hard way how to play Dark Souls 3… so i didn’t need any tricks anymore ! I knew it was going to be very hard, but i spent so much time against the first tough opponents, that i was kinda OK to learn every moves of the next ones, and even accept death ! That’s right… Dark Souls 3 made me accept what i wasn’t accepting before… Death and loosing experience !
In Dark Souls 3 it wasn’t an issue anymore and that’s why i loved it more than anything !
More and more screenshots !
Dark Souls III ? A splendid experience !
I took my time to finish the game… during my first and only run i played for around 65 hours, when other players can finish the game way faster ! I tried to explore every places and find most of the secrets and hidden areas, though i had to check the Wiki for both the Dragon Area and the bridge giving you access to the depths of hell 😉
I have grinded a lot… yes because it was fun !
And when you have to collect 20K gold to buy a key to open a tower, better do it in a place you know well… where you’re not going to die, and where you’ll manage to get the money without too much trouble 🙂 But also there were places where grinding, was more a way to increase your battle skills ! And at this point i clearly think to the boreal valley where i stayed for a long time at the first bonfire in the city, surrounded by patrols of phantoms who could one shot me if their combos weren’t avoided.
Grinding wasn’t tedious in Dark Souls 3, it was a fun experience between 2 explorations 🙂 Besides we’re not all hardcore gamers seeking the ultimate performances, to play nude with a simple club and one arm in the back… I am not that kind of player, i am just a casual player !
Still got more screenshots for you !
Taking time to create your own Build !
Dark Souls 3 was so interesting… that for the first time i cared about my weight !
I cared about my rolling speed… something i really never cared about in the 2 previous episodes lol. Yeah even if i was as slow as a turtle i didn’t care… In Dark Souls 3 it was like i was rediscovering the series ! Staying under 70% weight at all time to keep a good rolling speed, even if i had to equip parts of armor i didn’t like… just the time to increase the stamina of my build. I also began to care about the reach length of weapons, and about their swings speeds…
All these things a casual gamer like me never cared about either before. Well it Seems that when a game is so interesting and forces you to be serious… you’re becoming serious on every parts of it ! And so the whole experience was simply becoming more enjoyable ! No fear of death, and hungry to discover every hidden places… That’s the kind of game where you don’t want to see THE END.
Also i’d like to come back on one thing i said in a previous review…
Where i said that Lords of the Fallen wasn’t so much easier than a Dark Soul… that was true before Dark Souls 3 yes ! But Dark Souls 3 difficulty is clearly a level above the others ! And at this time i think about my battles against the Twins, the Nameless king and maybe the worst of all… the Dark Side of Iudex Gundyr ! I think i died 40 times against the Twins… 15 times only against the Nameless King, but it was because it was after the Twins… And so i had time to practice my moves lol. But Champion Gundyr… Frankly i don’t remember how many times i died but it was A LOT !
Anyway… even as a casual gamer i managed to prevail ! Nothing is impossible, just believe in yourself !
Some last screenshots and it’s over !
As a last sentence i would say that Dark Souls 3 is a MUST HAVE for… anyone !
The difficulty i played on : None to choose, it’s like Dark Souls
How long is this game : ~65 hours for me but i took my time
Would i recommend it to a friend ? : I don’t think anyone need my recommendation lol
Did i pay for it ? : Sorry…
