Dark Souls 2 – Masochism Part 2

Like many people i have waited for a long time for this sequel ! The world acclaimed action rpg, one of the hardest game ever made on the subject. Playing to dark souls 2 is like riding a motorcycle, you do one mistake and you can die ! Dark Souls 2 is like learning discipline… yeah sometimes i even wonder if this game haven’t been designed in a military camp lol.

More open world compared to the first episode, and in a game society where Moving Freely is becoming a common thing… i shouldn’t be surprised. The problem is open world can also mean “where do i have to go next ?!?“… And in this episode i had to rely a lot on internet to know what to do. It’s the only episode of Dark Souls where i had to do that… Even if i like to exploration i felt like if i was in a maze !

Apart from this which was a bad point for me, the game is fucking beautiful ! There was clearly a LARGE improvement on that part, and you don’t even need a strong computer ! SLI profile is well recognized, and my 2 old GTX 460 were able to run the game at FULL graphics with a smooth 60FPS ! The developers have obviously worked very hard.

Another point that i still don’t get in the Dark Souls Series, is that wearing pieces of armor is somewhat useless ! Frankly did you see the speed runs on Youtube ? where some hardcore gamers are finishing the game in less than 2 hours ? no one of these players are wearing armors, and if they do that’s light armor or nothing else… Because that way they can move faster and dodge more efficiently the enemies.

But for the guys like me who like to wear heavy armors in other games, well that just sucks ! The only opponents who are dealing less damage are the small critters, or little soldiers you can find on the way… but a lot of monsters are still dealing enormous damage even if you’re wearing a Tank armor ! And i am not even speaking of some bosses who can still One Shot you with their strong attack ! If i was nude i would have understood… but killed in one shot with a big armor no it’s nonsense !

Anyway complaining in Dark Souls 2 is like speaking to a wall… you don’t like it ? well… we don’t care ! Now let’s talk about the difficulty, is this sequel harder than the original ? Yes… and No ! I actually never saw so many healing items with all these healing stones ! Now ok it’s true the time to use your estus flask have been slowdowned, but there’s an attribute that can speed up the drinking process !

And your opponents are maybe tougher, but you got many ways to heal yourself if you use them at the right time ! Now this Dark Souls 2 is even more like the Prepare to Die expansion of Dark Souls, you clearly need to learn how to dodge attacks, and to stop blocking all the way behind your shield. Because even the highest shield won’t protect you for long, as some opponents will rain attacks on you !

Concerning the Weapon design it’s great ! Some weapons are a real fun to swing ! deadly, massive and hitting like a truck ! Like the greatsword you can see on one screenshot below, it may looks like rusty… but you will sure hear the earth tremble under your feet, when this baby will hit the ground, after having split in half your target 😀 And it’s orgasmic to feel such power lol !

But my favorite design was actually a Great Hammer, which was looking like a solid big branch with an ANVIL at the edge attached by chains !!! lol ! An Anvil attached on a little tree that you’re actually wielding like a weapon lol ! Of course these kind of weapons are requiring a strong hero, and so a good deal of points invested in the strength attribute !

Though Dark Souls 2 is a violent game in the way that you’re killing over and over, it’s important to mention that there’s no blood, no mutilations and even if some monsters are clearly horrifying… it never cross any blood or gore line. That’s clearly a mature decision from the designers, as you can be assured that this game won’t be banned in some countries, and at the same won’t be held responsible for mass murders in schools, like it happened in the united states with other violent video games.

At least if you’re a parent reading these lines, you know that you can buy Dark Souls to your child ! I myself would buy a”Dark Soul like for my children without a doubt, knowing that even if this game is beautifully designed, and that it could look real… It’s still looking like a classic action role playing game, and the player knows from the start that it’s a game, and never will your children be influenced by some sadistic animation, or reality drugs or sex you could find in a GTA…

The dark ambiance is still the heart of Dark Souls, and it even made me think of an old action rpg Moonstone ! Where you were fighting different kind of monsters in dark locations, as well as champions like yourself who wanted the supreme title ! I am actually wondering if the creators of Dark Soul used this as an inspiration ?!? Possible as Moonstone was also hard, unforgiving and you had to learn the attacks of each opponents.

There are plenty of bosses in Dark Souls 2, largely more than in Dark Souls… their difficulty is like the roller coaster, some are really easy to beat from the start, and some others are a pain in the ass… meaning you’ll die over and over before finally finding the right strategy ! Though it can be frustrating to die when the boss is low hp, but nevertheless finds the right attack to take you by surprise ! The sneaky bastard !

And unfortunately it happens a lot in Dark Souls… meaning your opponents have an equal chance like you to kill, even if they’re near death ! Sometimes you have done the hardest part, but this son of a bitch manages to get the upper hand, by delivering a quick attack you were not expecting ! And also because you need to keep cool as your level of stress during boss fights, can quickly become overwhelming !

Like it’s predecessor Dark Souls can played again and again, up to what we call NG+7 ! Meaning 7th times you actually begin from all over, keeping everytime your existing gear, powers, level and attributes, to do the same game all over again but with monsters all harder than ever ! In fact you can even replay your Dark Souls adventure 100 times if you want… But the level of difficulty will be stuck to NG+7. (who would be mad enough to want a NG+100 with a real NG+100 difficulty ?!? lol)

There are also other challenges to overcome in order to win special gear, like the ring to make your weapons invisible which is overpowered in online PvP, but also other challenges that can unlock parts of the game. And that means this game is worthing all the money you have spent, as the replayability is excellent for fans ! Not me… Once i finish a Dark Souls 1 time, i am uninstalling it. There are so many excellent games out there that i simply can’t spend my life on Dark Souls 😉

Dark Souls is furthermore very addictive ! the online servers are still swarming with players, even years after the first episode ! Dark souls is at the Action RPG what Starcraft is at the real time strategy… meaning a reference for other games ! Always imitated but never equaled ! Some have tried like Bound by Flame… but it’s always far behind in terms of quality. Also thanks to the fact that you can virtually build your avatar the way you want, the possibilities are quite infinite ! And there’s never a better build than another one, all will depend on your play style.

Actually even when you’re like me a casual player, playing to a game until the quest is over but never doing another playground, Dark Souls stays in your head for a long time ! That game is grabbing your very soul even in real life, because it asked so much of you that it became part of you !

The area of play is much bigger than the first dark souls, and it’s also why you can easily get lost… besides there are many locations which are requiring the same level to explore, and so you never really know if you have made some progression in the main storyline, or if it was just a secondary mission… That’s actually why i had to seek help online, because at some point i was wondering if all of this was connected ? or if it was just scattered all around the place without any meaning ?!?

Anyway… Whatever the level of frustration you have accumulated over hours of dying… unless like me you have used a little trick to cheat death… Dark Souls 2 is a game you will play to the very end whatever the cost in your life ! Even if you have to sleep less, and even if you have to argue with your wife about the hours you’re spending in front of your computer !! Dark Souls 2 will keep you focused all the way long, as it’s designed to confront you with your own nightmares !

I never played to the 3 Dlc’s of Dark Souls II yet… if i do i’ll create a separate review.

The difficulty i played on : There’s none to choose… it’s Hard that’s all ^_^

The note i am giving it on 5 :

How long is this game : around 70 hours for me

Would i recommend it to a friend ? : Yes… though my favorite stays the first episode

Did i pay for it ? : No… thanks Vuze ! 🙂
