The Dark Eye in a 3D Action RPG
Played from a downloaded version found on The Pirate Bay.
If you’re a Fan of The Dark Eye… Yes this game is for you ! If you’re the kind of guy like me who played to Drakensang and Blackguards but also Dark Souls, then of course you have to try Demonicon ! But for all the others… You might not find this game very appealing. They adapted the game mechanisms of the Dark Eye in a 3D Action RPG…
And that means everyone has to wait for its Initiative turn ! That means at the beginning you won’t understand why your character is so slow to react… You won’t understand why there is a kind of pause after your hit, and sometimes just before the hit of your opponent. That means you got the initiative and you have 1 second to decide what to do ! Keep attacking or dodge the attack ? So it’s a Turn based and Action at the same time !
Also the automatic savegame is ruining the whole game ! Why ? Because in Dark Souls… You know you can save your progress at campfires. But in Demonicon, you NEVER KNOW when the save is going to activate ! Ok most of the time it will activate after a battle, an important dialogue or an important part of the quest. But let’s say you are exploring and have to quit the game… Unless you’re lucky and stumble on the next save point, you’ll lose your progress !
How long is this game ?
Personally it took me 28 hours to complete it. But you can finish it way faster if you don’t give a fuck about the side quests, or if you’re not the type to search for every hidden little things. Because there are a lot of secrets !
Is the Story interesting ? Solid Plot and Background ?
At least we can give it that ! Demonicon is based on The Dark Eye… And every games out there based on this RPG do have an interesting plot ! Besides From A to Z you’ll have to take important decisions, which will influence the whole course of the story. Aventuria is a cruel world, and so most of the time these decisions will be hard to take.
How Pro is Voice Acting ?
The dialogues are good ! Yes it’s indeed professionals behind !
Is there a Maximum Level you can reach ?
Not really… as there’s no Level in the Dark Eye. You gain Adventure Points that can raise your attributes and your skills, But you won’t find enough experience to Max them all. As a word of advice keep your experience, and spend it when you know it’s a good investment. Because for every actions you’re doing, like harvesting plants, disarming a trap, or influencing someone during a dialogue… You’ll get Adventure points for that !
So by investing points in the right skills… you can get even more points ! Of course sometimes you’ll miss out some good opportunities. And that’s why there is a secret trick below, to save your game at any time !
Is Demonicon challenging ?
Not really, that’s why i advised you above to keep your adventure points for non combat skills. Because even with a bad dodge, melee and defense skills… you can kill a lot of things out there ! Just learn to not be too greedy during battles, and evade at the right time and you won’t have to put a single point in weapons before at least 10 hours !
Are the enemies respawning ?
No once you clear an area, it’s cleared for good ! So it’s impossible to grind.
How important are the skills ?
Unless for Haggling which is useless, as i used it only one time during a dialogue and it was only requiring me to be level 2, all other skills are important to gain more adventure points. Blacksmith for crafting, Perception is used to discover hidden treasures, Lore and Fast Talk to influence dialogs. But though you can raise all these skills to Level 7 max… the highest skill check i had was requiring level 6… So I think the devs have released their game in a Beta state lol.
Is there a major bug in Demonicon ?
Yes there is one… and it’s kind of an exploit. Even if you don’t want to cheat, the game itself is going to cheat for you lol ! As soon as you will hit the Chapter 3 of the game, and even a little before in chapter 2… Dying (or simply leaving the game) will make you come back with MORE EXPERIENCE POINTS ! Yeah that means you died… you came back at your last save point, and out of nowhere… You’re gaining several adventure points for nothing !
So… that’s why on the last screenshot you can see here, you’ll see i had more than 3000 unspent adventure points by the end. That was the experience i didn’t want to use, because i knew it came out of the blue.
Is there a trick to know in Demonicon ?
Yes you can actually copy paste your last savegame at any time like in Dark Souls…
Alt-Tab during the game after you’ve seen the Save Icon at the bottom right of your screen.
Go into your users\profile\appdata\roaming\kalypso media\demonicon\saves
And you’ll find there your last .ssave file
So… is it worth buying or downloading ?
Last time i checked it was 15€ on Steam. (here is the link to steam)
It has its flaws but it’s good anyway… (Or look on PB)
I just regret the lack of challenge… Though you could experience some difficulties against the BOSS battles. And as soon as you’ll hit the Chapter 3, some regular mobs will become tougher !
The difficulty i played on : Hard (challenging… still opponents are somewhat a little dumb)
How long is this game : 28 hours (If you do All side quests and find every hidden things)
Did i pay for it ? : NO.
