Lands of Lore 2 (GOG)
When i was younger… in 2004 if i remember well ! I played to Betrayal at Krondor using the famous DOSBox. More than 11 years after it’s official release, Betrayal at Krondor was still a great game ! Despite the old graphics, the story was great, the music was wonderful and there were tons of things to do ! And of course i had to use DOSBox to play it on a brand new windows. That’s where GOG comes in…
They’re basically doing all the dirty work for us, i mean configuring DOSbox for every old games they’re selling via their platforms. I find that a great initiative to revive oldies ! Though for Lands of Lore 2, i have to say that the 3DFX version isn’t working well with their DOSBox config… i’ve even tried with another DOSBox from some japanese website, and in the end i’ve managed to get Lands of Lore 2 to work with 3D… but at 1 FPS !!! So i just gave up… anyway not going to spend hours for just an old game.
Besides… it Was not Worth it !
If i played Lands of Lore 2, that’s because i’ve finished the first episode in the first place ! Because after finishing Krondor back in 2004-2005, i decided to try another old game using DOSBox and Lands of Lore was my next move. It was a great RPG as well with very cool cinematics and some good music ! Very interesting… that’s why i needed to play to this sequel ! And… i felt deceived !
Frankly… the first part of Lands of Lore 2, let’s say the first 20 hours are interesting Ok ! But after that the more i was progressing into the game, the more i was finding it BORING and so i was frustrated at the same time ! The Graphics are not bad… they are Ugly ! C’mon even a 1993 game like Betrayal at Krondor was better ! The musics are bringing a nice ambiance, but when you’re bored you just begin to not give a fuck about it. The controls and menus are one of the worse i’ve seen in such a game in a long time…
Let me put some screenshots before continuing on my “positive” review… lol !
The story is somewhat good… but at some point it was the same as the music, i was bored and i simply forgot what my goal was -_- There are places in Lands of Lore 2 like the huge Draconoid Caverns which are… Empty ! I mean it, i don’t have anything against exploring huge areas, on the contrary i love it because it’s adding exploration pleasure to the mix ! But in the case of Lands of Lore 2… my god i was exploring during hours the world of EMPTINESS ! There is NO Life in this game lol… T
There’s more life in DOOM than in LOL2 !
What’s the point of creating HUGE Areas, if only 10% of them are filled with interesting things to discover ? frankly ? It completely sucked out all my motivation on the long run… and when i arrived near 60% of the game main quest, i began to use the walkthrough on internet over and over. And i am the kind of guy who really dislike any sorts of help to advance in a game, i love to find by myself how to go further !
But in the case of LOL2, after some time i was simply thinking to one thing…
When is this fucking game going to finish ?
Really… my experience of Lands of Lore 2 was very painful !
Let’s put some more screenshots…
One positive thing in Lands of Lore 2 is… you can do what you want ! You can kill everybody if you feel the need to, and the whole storyline will change. That means you’ll see some unique cinematics, the walkthroughs on the net are also divided in 2 parts… the Good and the Bad Luther ! Yes Luther is your name, and in the case you don’t know…
You’re the son of the Ugly Woman at the end of Lands of Lore the first.
The shapeshifting curse is something i liked, though it can sometimes lead you to be stuck during a long time ! Let’s say you were in a small tunnel, you’re shapeshifting into some huge beast, because with these ugly menus you had not the time to click on your “anti-curse” spell, and then you can’t advance anymore ! You have to wait for your curse to reverse… and that can take 5…10 or maybe 15 minutes sometimes ! It can even lead you to death if the tunnel was so small, that your new beast form can’t even breathe !
There are also various situations in the game where… i was really wondering how a human brain, could guess what we had to do in order to progress ! No frankly when i read the walkthrough… the guy who wrote it said several times that in order to advance, he had to test everything with everything to resolve some puzzles… I mean there is NOTHING Logical ! You just try this with that and that with this… until it finally does something, that’s like typing on your keyboard and trying every combinations, without knowing what you’re doing until it works !
THIS IS BULLSHIT, USELESS and FRUSTRATING !!
And that’s why i hated this Lands of Lore 2… and got bored very fast !
Let’s put some more screenshots…
When i finish a game i generally have a good feeling inside me, a feeling of virtual power like i managed to achieve something ! I mean you spend hours on a game and you want to see the end ! Unless it’s a mmorpg of course… That’s why i don’t play to rpg on the net but rather alone offline, most of the time the story is more interesting and i can even learn many things from the game !
From Lands of Lore 2 the only thing i learned was… I LOST TIME !
The difficulty i played on : HARD
Would i recommend it to a friend ? : if he’s desperate yeah why not !
Did i pay for it ? : NO and i am happy to have kept my money ! (Thanks Pirate Bay !)
While i am writing these words, i do remember now that i tryed to play this game once ! And i got bored at the very start of the game lol… what changed with years is i finally went from A to Z but it was painful !
I put some last screenshots… good riddance !
