Might and Magic X Legacy
Beware mortals ! as you’re entering Old School Ground !
Pleasantly Surprised i was, when i learned about the release of the 10th Episode of M&M ! Frankly i was thinking it was completely over, as this series used to alternate between the good and worse since Might & Magic 6. Actually i used to play since the award winning Might & Magic 4 and 5, which could be combined into one Huge Game !
It was the Golden Age of M&M, along with the tactical version called Heroes of Might & Magic.
But then over the next episodes and the introduction of Real 3D, the might & magic aura began to fade slowly… Episode 6 was good, episode 7 was clearly bad, then episode 8 was like a surge of pride just to say “no we’re not dead and we can do better !“, but in the end an episode 9 was released, and it was a fucking joke… The 3DO society was running out of funds, and the game was clearly sold in stores in a “beta” state.
There was a community patch that addressed some of the issues… but it was too late.
Let’s see if Legacy is worth it this time…
Might & Magic X managed to revive the Old School !
From the very beginning at the main menu of the game, you know you’re in front of one mighty Might & Magic ! Epic music playing in the background of a Heroic piece of art, depicting your 4 adventurers fighting a huge dragon ! Yes that’s the Might & Magic Spirit i used to love !
As an Old School RPG you have to define your own team of adventurers ! This is something you should think carefully, as you need a balanced group of Warriors and Spell casters. A might & Magic game can quickly become unfair, if you only fill your team with a specific class. You need as much fighting skills as magical if you want to survive.
So when you first begin the game, you can make some mistakes… i did lol ! I even used to play 3 hours before noticing i had the wrong team ! Because each class is associated with a specific race, and following that class-race combination, you will be allowed to learn specific skills ! So plan your team for your characters to acquire varied skill sets.
If i can say something bad about the interface… In the options menu it’s clearly not intuitive, there are a lot of graphics options, but i only found most of them after having played 10 hours of game or so lol… And it was by accident ! So in these screenshots the first aren’t as good as the next.
Also there’s only 1 line of Quick Skill Bar, and not several like you can find in a lot of other games. Meaning you have to open your spell book many time if you’re using a wide array of spells or skills. Finally you have to know that this game doesn’t support SLI, so once more after my last game Skyrim… i was only able to use one of my video cards 🙁
So if i can give you new players some little advices, choose a “range weapon” and an “armor skill” right from the start ! As if you put a skill point in those, your characters will actually start with the associated gear ! 🙂 Also one of the best spell that will save your life is “Sleep”…
“Sleep” is what we call a CC spell, meaning crowd control and it’s a life saver in many situations ! Might & Magic is played on an old school map, where all positions are based on little squares. So in a fight you can end up being surrounded 4 ways, though most of the time you’ll be smart enough to wait for your opponents, just at the intersection of a small corridor.
But there are many ambushes in M&M, and many times will you face enemies coming from several ways ! There can be a maximum of 3 opponents on one square, meaning if you’re attacked from the front and behind, a maximum of 6 mobs will be able to hit you !
But 6 attacks at the same time can become quite deadly !
That’s where crowd control will come in handy ! This sleep spell will work as long as you don’t hit the afflicted target, so you can put 5 opponents into a deep sleep, while focusing all your strength on the last one ! This way you can get out of the worst situations. Of course to put 5 guys on sleep means casting the spell 5 times… so it might take you some rounds to accomplish this, but it’s worth it in the end !
Crowd Control can also be useful, in case there are enemies using bows or crossbows behind the front line. By casting sleep on the front line of opponents (meaning the square right in front of you 🙂 ), you’re preventing the archers behind to land their arrows on you, as their friends are directly on their line of sight.
Proof that the devs have done their work well !
Now about the game lifetime… Too short if you ask me ! The game is divided into 4 acts, and i would advise you to play in warrior mode which is the hardest mode, or you could finish the game in 30 hours maximum. M&M is not really a beautiful RPG with it’s outdated graphics, so at least please give us a long story for the financial investment.
The longest act is the 3rd one, because you can pretty much go wherever you like… compared to the 2 previous acts where it was largely more linear. Understand that M&M is a tribute to old school RPG… There’s no open world here ! Well ok you can explore the land sure, but a square is a square lol… if they want you to go to your right after the tree, you WILL have to turn right lol. Frustrating but also nostalgic for people in their 30’s like me 🙂
What i actually didn’t like in Legacy was the 4th and final act, as the game is reduced to a simple dungeon crawling. M&M is already a Dungeon Hack in the most simple form, meaning room-monster-treasure… So no need to have a straightforward act oriented towards battles during hours and hours !
You can’t even train your skills during this act…
Yes because your characters are earning 3 skill points, each time they gain a new level of experience ! To become Grand Master in a skill you need to invest 25 points in that skill, and then you have to find the trainer ! Though as the game is not that long, and as the final act is devoid of any trainers…
Act 3 will be the last moment to train every skills before it’s too late.
Another thing that could be improved are the Audio Dialogs, there are too few of them ! It was actually rare to hear somebody talk, apart from the usual barks of your own characters, which are becoming a nuisance after some time… Clearly we are in 2014 and games should always be in Full Audio !
Here i think the Devs have recorded the dialogs themselves lol…
Now about the plot… the story is good and there is some solid background, but… it’s not like you’re in a Skyrim or Dragon Age where your actions can influence the course of time. In M&M X your actions are limited to explore, kill, gather treasures and experience. So the story and all the lore you can find are kinda useless, as we don’t really care about them !
99% of the quests can be done without reading any of the books you can find.
Yeah i sound like i hated this game sometimes lol… not at all ! I actually loved it but i am pointing out all the problems i’ve seen. Might & Magic 10 is a nice RPG experience, and even if i was naturally enthralled as an old fan of the series, i was expecting something longer and with more consistence. It’s sad to meet a lot of people you don’t really interact with…
Most of the NPC’s are just standing there like trees, and serves no real purpose other than telling you their own story, or their beliefs about the ongoing political plot… But it’s not going to help you anyway, it’s like talking for talking and nothing else 90% of the time.
A funny sentence occasionally barked by my dwarf scout was “it seems like people are just standing there waiting for us to solve their problems !” lol… The devs do have a sense of humor after all 😀 , as it was exactly the feeling i had ! 10 Years ago i had no problems with that… But Come On ! Even a Dungeon Crawler in 2014 needs to have some life ! Or at least don’t pretend to put life where it’s not needed…
What i actually enjoyed was the re-introduction of the enigma chests, which was introduced for the first time more than 20 years ago, in the Award Winning RPG Betrayal at Krondor ! Then it was also re-used in the first chapter of the Elder’s Scrolls Arena.
These riddles are making the players think and it’s a good thing !
At first i was going to give a 4 on 5 to M&M X, because it was really a good experience from an old school fan point of view. But it’s true that the last Act of the game, clearly shaded the positive vision i had from the beginning… After this last Act the game can still be played, but why on earth would a player continue in a game devoid of life ? and where the acquired knowledge of books is useless… ?!?
To conclude I would only recommend Might & Magic X Legacy to Old School players, or to the youngsters who would like to experience, what their parents used to play at their age. But i would never have paid for such a game… and actually i didn’t thanks to the P2P 😉
The difficulty i played on : Warrior ! it’s hard but fair 😉
How long is this game : around 50 hours for me.
Would i recommend it to a friend ? : yes but only if he is a M&M fan.
Did i pay for it ? : No… thanks Vuze !
