Cheers Up Fans of Classic Bard’s Tale
2 Weeks ago i completed the Saga of Legend of Grimrock, and i simply wanted more ! I saw on Gog that Paper Sorcerer was reviewed as a little gem ! And that it has been created by one lonewolf Jesse Gallagher.
Everytime i hear that one guy created a video game all by itself, i always tend to think it’s going to be hard for him / her. You know… Back in 1980 it was common to see Independent little studios like Ultra Runaway, and i think to The Faery Tale Adventure a great game designed by David Joiner. In 1980 these lone programmers could be successful !
But now there are huge studios with huge resources, creating huge games like Witcher 3 and Dragon Age Inquisition… And so the competition is truly ferocious ! Not mentioning the Hacking part… Because of course when a Huge Studio creates a game, hacking is not going to be a huge loss. There’s so much money invested in marketing that there will be enough sales to fill the loss.
But for an independent studio… each person downloading the game is an important loss. Actually Jesse Gallagher even had an account on The Pirate Bay where Paper Sorcerer was widely shared. And he posted that it would be nice to pay the 5$ for the game, if the people who downloaded it liked it…
But you know like me or not… that the big sentence :
“Big downloaders are those who pay the most for legal stuff” is just a myth !
The guys who are downloading the most... will continue to do so as nobody’s going to arrest them. If you want the behaviors to change you have to show the people that downloading illegal stuff is risky ! And for the moment… It’s not. Grant me one day the ability to drive a Ferrari without paying for it, and tell me that i’ll be able to do so for the rest of my life ! Without paying a penny for it, and without any risks to be arrested by the police… Why would i pay for it ?
And concerning Paper Sorcerer it seems Piracy have done more harm than good, as the developer simply couldn’t keep his promises in terms of updates, and even shipping all the boxes to the kickstarter backers. He said on Pirate Bay some years ago, that he had only won 1/20 of the money needed to make profit. Of course after all this hard work on this game, and seeing the bad results in terms of money… I understand completely that he decided to leave the boat.
How long is this game ?
It took me a little less than 35 hours to complete it, and there are some doors that i couldn’t open. Now as the updates stopped in 2015, the game was not bug free and i’ve seen on forums that some things were not finished by the dev, and the latest updates also brought some little bugs.
Is the Story interesting ? Solid Plot and Background ?
This game is solid and very addictive if like me you’re a Fan of the 1985 Bard’s Tale Video Game.
How Pro is Voice Acting ?
There’s no Voice acting.
Is there a Maximum Level you can reach ?
Unfortunately the max level is 50… Because as your reach it, the experience won in battles will become useless. And the issue is you can reach this level 5 good hours before the end of the game, and even without too much grinding. So the latest fights won’t be really rewarding… Just Money and Loots but no more XP.
Fortunately there is an alternate way to XP and that’s the Skill Trainer in town, where you can spend all your money to raise the skills of your party even further.
Is Paper Sorcerer challenging ?
Put yourself in 1980 difficulty mode and you’ll suffer during the first hours 🙂 All fights will then depend on your Crowd control abilities ! Because like in the 1985 Bard’s Tale, some opponents can literally wipe your party with their powers. So it’s a matter of timing your actions well and keep the enemies asleep or paralyzed… At least in 1980 mode.
The first Boss fights can be painful… The Second Boss is the worst of all. Generally speaking the first 5 Boss will be a real challenge… Then as you grow more and more powerful, The Boss will become less dangerous than some Checkpoints fights. Even the very last battle of the game is less dangerous than the one just before 😉
Are the enemies respawning ?
The usual blocks levels can be cleaned, while the catacombs can be used to grind experience as random groups of mobs will jump on you every 15 seconds or so. Grinding 1 to 2 hours can be interesting during the first 10 levels, as the second boss i spoke above can be a pain in the ass if you’re 1 or 2 levels short in 1980 mode.
How important are the skills ?
My advice for you will be a team composed of The sorcerer of course, then The Witch, The Imp and the Troll. That’s the team i used to prevail in 1980… In fact at the beginning i used The Minotaur instead of the Troll, then the Skeleton helped me greatly for the 2nd Boss… But i ended with The Troll for the rest of the game.
- The Witch have the best healing spells, and later can also cast sleep.
- The Imp is great for Crowd Control from A to Z.
- The Troll is a Killer !
By the end of the game when your Characters will be level 45 to 50, The Sorcerer upgraded in Arch Magus and the Troll will get each a Killer Skill. And these skills will simply save your life in some late fights… Like your Troll doing 2000 damage to a single enemy, and your sorcerer doing 800 to every mobs. The trick is even to go back to the secret haven to sleep and restore your energy, in order to be able to use these Killer skills at the very start of a difficult fight.
in 1980 Mode you must also make an intensive use of Dots (Damage overtime Spells), but also Weakening spells.
Is there a major bug in Paper Sorcerer ?
There are some bugs…
- a few chests won’t open in the latest levels
- one or two puzzles are bugged
- one or two skills don’t work as they should
- The experience needed is bugged between levels 44 and 50. You can literally go from level 44 to 50 in 3 or 4 fights… And after that as i said above, experience is becoming useless.
Is there a trick to know in Paper Sorcerer ?
Loots are randomly generated and the more you advance in the game, the better the loots. So… You can Save before opening any chests or looting any purses, and reload if you found crappy gear 😉 The best equipment can be found in the boss chest, and in the chests which are hidden or after difficult checkpoint fights.
Even better while exploring the catacombs… You have to know that chests there have specific placements, but if you save and reload… The chests will re-appear at a different place with new loots inside. So if you feel like cheating a little or feel like you have been very unlucky with loots, go in the catacombs… Check where the chests are appearing in this level of the catacombs, place yourself a little in between these rooms and Save. Reload your game and go open the chests, then save and do it again… You can farm gear and money this way.
Tips : Fire Bombs and Acid Flasks are the key to some very hard battles.
So… is it worth buying or downloading ?
Fans of the Classic Rpgs like Bard’s Tale will love it ! (here is the link to gog)
Game is very addictive, good old 1980 soundtrack, very challenging… The lone dev have really made an Incredible work ! C’mon for 5$ such an interesting game is A STEAL ! I wish there would be more games like this !
The difficulty i played on : 1980 Mode and it’s VERY Hard !
How long is this game : Less than 35 hours with 3 more hours of Save / Reload for good Loots.
Would i recommend it to a friend ? : YES
Did i pay for it ? : No… as i said it’s a law problem enforcing our bad leechers behaviors 🙁
