The Surge from Deck 13
When Dark Souls meet with Doom 3 !
Played from a cracked version + Update 1 from CodeX found on The Pirate Bay.
You have finished Dark Souls 3 and need more challenge ? The Surge is made just for you !
The Surge have been designed by Deck 13 the creators or Lords of the Fallen. LotF was too short as you could finish it in 20 hours, and it was also far easier than Dark Souls… So Deck 13 learned from their mistake and came back with a splendid game with around 40 hours of gameplay, and as challenging as a real Soul game.
Though i still got this feeling of confinement… I mean in LotF the area to explore was small, and the feeling of Open World you can find in every Dark Souls was just not there ! And in The Surge… Unfortunately It’s kinda the same thing ! Between dark corridors and ventilation passages… I hope you’re not claustrophobic or you won’t like this game 😉
And if you already played to Half Life or Doom 3 you’ll obviously feel at home… Also this game is a Fireworks of Blood lol ! In Souls game enemies are simply disappearing when you kill them… But in The Surge you’re cutting limbs with oceans of Blood flowing on your screen 😀 It’s Violent, it’s Gory and it’s very Enjoyable 😀
How long is this game ?
Nearly 40 hours to complete the game and search for every little hidden passages. Though in these 40 hours you can easily count 3 to 5 hours of grind ! That’s the time required to farm some enemies in order to get a new complete set of armor, or also to raise your core power when you just don’t have enough to equip this new gear.
Is the Story interesting ? Solid Plot and Background ?
Like i said above it’s a Mix of Half Life… With scientists working on a big project to save humanity, and of course as always they went too far and they became the laboratory rats of their own projects. And it’s also like Doom 3 with it’s dark corridors, and many of your enemies are hidden to jump on you at the last moment.
How Pro is Voice Acting ?
It’s good and you can feel the Horror Survival Ambiance.
Is there a Maximum Level you can reach ?
I don’t think there is a maximum level and even if there’s one you won’t reach it ! Maybe if you replay the game in NG+ after you finish it a first time… But still it will be hard to see the limit. On this point Deck 13 enhanced their work of Lords of the Fallen (where at some point you could find free magic experience that you couldn’t use anymore as it was already maxed out), as it’s really interesting to level now and you can customize your character the way you want. There’s always a new way to boost your avatar depending on your style of play.
Is The Surge challenging ?
Oh yeah ! It’s hard… it’s the difficulty of a Dark Souls and i mean it ! I’d say the most difficult zone is the second… called Central Production B. Because the first zone is easy enough, you can avoid the attacks pretty easily… And as soon as you arrive in the Second Area, the difficulty level seems like Spike ! It’s like going from Dark Souls the 1st to Dark Souls 3, with fast and strong enemies asking you to wake up !
At the time i am writing this review i am still struggling to beat the Final Boss lol… got my ass kicked 5 times so far but i know the game ends after it, so i’ll take my time .
Are the enemies respawning ?
Yes like in Dark Souls, there’s no fire camp but it’s the same area called a Med Bay where you can spend your experience to raise your Core Power (extremely important to use new implants), or to upgrade your existing gear with more powerful versions. Good to know, this Safe Area will lock itself if some enemies are too close !
How important are the skills ?
No skills in The Surge but modules ! And these are all doing something different like raising your hit points, giving you the ability to heal yourself (like the Estus Flask in Dark Souls), slowing time around you, lowering the stamina cost for evasing moves, using your energy bar accumulated by hitting your enemies for a casual healing, but there are also modules to raise this same energy you get every time you strike someone ! That means you can tailor your avatar powers the way you want ! These Modules are requiring Core Power to work so it’s important to raise it !
Apart from all these modules there are 2 other important things to know !
There’s a concept called Weapon Proficiency which is “The more you use a kind of weapon, the more you’re deadly with it”. It’s obviously something good… And that’s why this game requires some grinding to do ! As an example i personally changed 3 times of weapon… I began with 1 Handed, then i went to a Big weapon i found on the first Boss, then i went for Dual Wielding after the second Boss, and at last i used the Staff i found on the third Boss ^_^
That means i had to do some hours of Grind to raise the Weapon Proficiency… But that’s not really a problem ! Because first you need to learn how your weapon moveset works, and second you must know that past level 18 your Proficiency becomes very long to level up, and the damage bonus is not that important.
Because i saw a guy complaining on Steam… Saying this game was shit because he had to grind for hours every time he had to use a new weapon. That’s a poor excuse because you could grind just 1 hour for each weapon and it was good enough to continue the game. I guess some people will always find things to complain just for the sake of it.
The second important thing is you have to cut the limbs of your enemies, if you want to build yourself a new complete set of armor or also find new weapons. So that’s why one more you’ll have to spend some time to grind areas, to cut the head, body, arms and legs of a specific enemy to learn the schematics of that armor and build one for yourself.
Also like in Lords of the Fallen, there’s a hardcore way to beat every Boss and doing that will get you An Enhanced Version of the weapon you can find on them. As an example let’s take the second boss, you could focus on his central body to kill it faster… But if you want the Weapon 2.0 you’ll have to cut his 5 legs (and that will be more dangerous and take more time) before finally put it to the rest.
Is there a major bug in The Surge ?
No… though some crashes can happen, it happened around 10 times to me in 40 hours.
Then it’s not a bug but more a complain… If you want to go back to a previous area, most of the time you have to walk through entire levels… Even with the shortcuts you open, it can be rather boring. As in Dark Souls you can simply teleport from one zone to another. But yeah i know The Surge is not DS…
Is there a trick to know in The Surge ?
There is one trick to know to make the game easier… That’s the Dash Attack ! Once you learn it you’ll only use it… Go forward, press the run button and then the Attack button and your avatar will slide forward delivering a fast and powerful blow ! I learned this technic when i was struggling to survive in the second zone and it eased my suffering 😉
Then another thing which is not a Trick… is the best area to Grind will be the Exhibition Hall after you found the Exo Rig granting you Security Access. You’ll have to go back to that area and it will be swarmed with enemies granting a lot of experience ! You can also farm there 4 different kinds of powerful armors.
So… is it worth buying or downloading ?
It’s really a good game ! (here is the link to steam)
Though it’s still a little short compared to Souls Game… (Or look on PB)
With The Surge… Deck 13 have proven they could design their own Soul Game ! For their next game though i’d like them to make an OPEN WORLD ! I am sick of this feeling of confinement… After playing to The Surge you’ll enjoy even more a little walk in the garden 😉
The difficulty i played on : There’s None it’s like Dark Souls.
How long is this game : ~40 hours (counting 3-5 hours of Grind and finding every passages)
Would i recommend it to a friend ? : YES and i already did !
Did i pay for it ? : NO.
