The Witcher 3 : Wild Hunt Review

Along with Dragon Age Inquisition… probably the best RPG i have ever played since the old Betrayal at Krondor ! Yeah because for a long time… even years ! Krondor was still my reference in terms of RPG despite its old graphics 😉 What i seek in a RPG, is what i used to know when i was playing to real role playing games, with friends around a table back in the early 90’s… I Mean the feeling to be part of the story, the feeling that any interactions could change the whole course of events.

I played for several years to Real RPGs, and of course i began with the famous Dungeons & Dragons like a lot of people. Though my favorite world using D&D rules was Dragonlance, and then later Dark Sun ! But i also spent years playing to Rolemaster with the superb creation named Shadow World ! Maybe you have no clue of what i am speaking about but nevermind…

And it’s far to be an exhaustive list of all the Real Rpgs i’ve tried.

And since the 1st episode of Witcher… i kinda felt this unique ambiance of playing to a real rpg once more !

I spent around 243 hours on The Witcher 3

In these 240+ hours i am also counting the 2 Dlcs Hearts of Stone + Blood and Wine. It was a fucking great experience to live ! Really… i felt i lived a unique experience and i will never be able to thank CD Projekt enough for that… It wasn’t only a simple video game, it was like the feelings you got when watching a real intense movie, but this time for weeks and weeks !

That’s why i think like some other people, that when you complete The Witcher 3 it’s exactly the same thing as when you broke with a girl ! It’s Heart Breaking !

if you can read french, there’s a whole section on seduction on this Blog 😀 But that’s another subject !

Let’s put some screenshots !

What is good about Witcher are the Investigations which are taking a major part of the game ! And i do remember it was the same since Witcher the 1st, though your tracking abilities have been greatly enhanced in this 3rd episode ! It’s not only Geralt of Rivia… it’s Private Investigator Geralt lol !

Tracking not only footprints throughout the forests, but also scents of perfume in cities, or just the scent of creatures in sewers ! Analyzing body parts of the victims you find, in order to better understand who might be the murderer ! That’s all the good ingredients you find in a real RPG !

RPG is not only about killing monsters over and over, grinding for XP like you can see it in Mmorpgs !

A Real RPG is much more than that !

And the more interesting your avatar life is, the more sensations and feelings you’ll get ! And in Witcher 3… everything is done to make you feel you’re Geralt ! You’re feeling what he feels… meaning nothing lol ! Ok that wasn’t a good example as Geralt is a witcher and can’t feel things like a human being… and that’s why he is so good at what he does !

Tracking and Killing creatures, resolving murders, and even killing humans of course ! But even though you’re a perfect Killing machine… that doesn’t mean you have to kill everything ! As you might know this sentence “with power comes responsibility

The amount of things you can do in Witcher 3 is HUGE… and i mean it ! It’s really Massive ! So we could compare that to an elder’s scroll like Skyrim maybe ? hmmm… no ! I would say that Skyrim is even more bigger than Witcher 3… You can spend 200 hours on Witcher 3, when you can spend 300 hours on a Bethesda game and still discovering new places.

But… There will be more Genuine Interactions in Witcher 3 than in Skyrim. As you might know, The elder’s scrolls games are making an extensive use of randomly generated dungeons or dialogues. No seriously when you compare the dialogues of Skyrim, Dragon Age Inquisition and Witcher 3…

  1. Witcher 3 Dialogues Quality are First in line !
  2. Dragon Age Inquisition coming very close behind.
  3. And Skyrim (and even the latest Fallout 4) finishing 3rd and 4th… Sorry !

And that alone makes the difference in the general ambiance of a game ! Because between feeling “you’re part of the dialogues” with the NPC you see on the screen, and feeling that “Your Avatar is speaking to the NPC” is making a Big difference in the end ! 😉 We always come back at that original feeling, that it’s becoming more than a game ! It’s another life you’re living in real time.

Maybe the easiest of the Witchers ?

Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is not hard at all… Well i don’t know i’ve played in Nightmare mode ! Maybe it’s just me… All i know is i’ve played Witcher 1 and 2 back in time with the mouse and keyboard, and Witcher 3 with a wireless Xbox 360 gamepad for windows. And i remember some battles in Witcher 1 which were hard, and some battles in Witcher 2 were fucking HARD ! But no in Witcher 3 i felt the difficulty was all right… Apart from 2 hard parts and it was at the beginning of the game.

As long as you stay focus in Witcher 3 you shouldn’t have to worry… But i have to admit that the Alternate Quen Sign, meaning the big yellow Globe, healing you as your opponents are raining hits on you, is a Life Saver ! 😉 In many battles this skill have literally saved my life ! So of course i maximized its power, and used a lot of runes on my gear to improve that power even more !

The first DLC was much harder though ! Maybe the devs saw that for a lot of people… witcher 3 was too easy ! And it’s true that in nightmare mode… some boss of Hearts of Stone were dealing a LOT of damage ! The last boss could kill me in 2 hits lol… And basically his attacks were composed of 2-3 hits, so… if my defense was broken i was dead 😀 So i had to learn his moves in order to finish the whole fight without being hit a single time 🙂

Not that hard if you stay focused… Just close your door and don’t answer the phone lol

As for the second DLC Blood and Wine, it’s kinda the same level of difficulty than in Hearts of Stone.

Of course you can also use Oils on your weapons, and drink Potions to make battles even more easier… but don’t ask me why, i bought all the recipes, was overloaded with potions in my equipment… and maybe used them 10 times during the whole game !

Maybe i am a masochist lol but frankly never felt the need to use them to win.

No Level limit = Peace of mind !

Though grinding XP is something that bores me… and so i am not doing it ! Having a XP limit is something i don’t like either ! I like to think that we can learn all our life, improving our skills in every domains without limits… And if a limit we want to put, it will be of our own will ! Not the will of the devs…

That’s why i was saddened by Bioware when they decided to put a level limit in DA Inquisition, because the first DLC got me on that limit… and after that no matter how many battles you have to do, no more rewards for these… that’s just bullshit !

Fortunately… CD Projekt didn’t make that mistake ! I finished the main plot taking my time, and doing all the side quests i could find… and i was only level 32 by the end of the game. But there were LOT of weapons i could craft, which were requiring to be levels 30 to 45+ ! Meaning there’s much space left for raising in levels, even with the released Dlcs !

And that’s great for players who like to improve their avatars even more !

In fact without grinding… At first i was wondering how you could reach these levels lol ? … even after finishing the 1st DLC i was only level 37 ! But it’s true that after the Second DLC Blood and Wine, i managed to reach level 45+ ! But in fact there’s an option to replay the whole game called New Game +, the kind of thing which was introduced in the Dark Souls series, and this way you can reach higher levels ! But i am not the kind of guy who likes to redo the whole story… When i complete a game it’s over for me.

Screenshots ! Always Screenshots !

I don’t know what i could want more from a game, than what witcher 3 managed to give me…

I should also mention that i LOVED GWENT ! Yes this little card game, i simply loved it and traveled in every villages and cities, to find all the players i could confront 🙂

It was like a peaceful moment between 2 investigations… 🙂

I also enjoyed the little fist fights because… in nightmare mode these were particularly HARD ! Not the first fights… but against the leaders, and sometimes against 2 or 3 guys at the same time… Yes it was Really Hard in nightmare 😀 Again i had to learn the precise moment to evade and counter !

The difficulty i played on : Nightmare and it was excellent !

How long is this game : 243 hours for me (main game + Both DLCs)

Would i recommend it to a friend ? : Friend or Foe… i Would !

Did i pay for it ? : No… but got it legally this time 😀 (came Free with my new Gtx 970)
