Warhammer Dark Omen – Sequel to SOTHR

After the pain in the ass called Shadow of the horned rat lol… fucking buggy game ! Well it was time to do the sequel of course ! To my good surprise there was no need for a GOG version of the game this time, there’s none anyway at the time i’m writing this… But as GOG recently acquired SOTHR, they’re obviously going to acquire the rights of selling Dark Omen soon 😉

Anyway… i just downloaded a .nrg version (nero image) from Emule this time.

It installed very well on my x64 Windows 7, but then i experienced 2 issues…

First was at the launch and i don’t remember how i fixed it, and the 2nd issue was about the “flickering” ! Well… i’ve downloaded the package from Dark Omen Fansite but it didn’t work… i mean i’ve replaced the .EXE and then the game was in Monochrome lol… And then i put back the .Exe from the original game, and don’t ask me why or how… but the flickering was gone and i wasn’t playing in CPU mode, i was still in 3D mode ! So i haven’t tried to understand lol…

I just didn’t touched to the options after that, and focused on playing ^_^

Dark Omen is what SOTHR should have been !

Dark Omen is better in every ways…

i mean where SOTHR was only frustration, Dark Omen is all about giving you the envy to try again ! In SOTHR cursing the game was common, but in Dark Omen… If you lose you can only blame yourself ! Your troops are doing exactly what you’re telling them, your wizards don’t spend the magic points if the enemy is too far, your crossbows and mortars are firing as soon as they’re in range, the biceps button is finally working the right way, and the battle interface is far better than before !

So Micro Management becomes a lot easier !

Your money is also spent more wisely, by increasing the armor level of your troops or hiring new volunteers between each battles ! And no more only to sustain your army, and praying for volunteers to come reinforce it, after a battle where you got decimated ! 😉 No more stress on that part and that was a relief !

I would say that this sequel is easier and harder at the same time…

Eeasier as there are no more “dumb behaviors” ! Like your wizard casting a spell towards the enemy but ultimately ending in wiping your regiment… But also Harder as this time you’re mainly going to fight against undeads ! And most undeads are scary creatures, and so you’ll have to manage the “Fear” level of your troops ! And that’s where the “biceps” button will motivate them !

The duration of the game is also a little higher, count between 15 to 18 hours (that’s what it took me to finish the game, counting the last battle where i lost… 4 hours !) and every missions are also much more interesting ! There’s a good story with a lot of speech between battles along with a good part of humor 😉 Your army is traveling across all the realm of Warhammer with many cool cutscenes as well !

The last battle is really a Tedious one…

I am not going to spoil anything don’t worry… i’ll just say that most missions are very well balanced. Of course it’s going to be difficult… it’s Warhammer ! And some missions will have to be replayed 5 times before passing with minimal casualties… But there are also 2 to 3 REALLY HARD missions ! Meaning you’ll need strategy as well as LUCK to win ! And if you don’t take a 1 day break ! Because these missions take some time, and you can be screwed after fighting for 20-30 minutes… Frustrating when it happens !

The last battle of Dark Omen… well if you’re VERY LUCKY you’ll win it easily… and if you’re not like me you’re going to spend hours on it ! It’s the last battle of the game, there are no more episodes after this one… and as this game was created in 1998 and since no more warhammer… The developers wanted to give us the Ultimate Challenge ! and they succeeded… Let’s just say that in terms of power you’re at 1 vs 3 ^_^ But you’ll discover that by yourself ! 😉

Dark Omen is a very good game for people seeking a REAL Challenge. And if you’re interested in even more and difficult challenges, you can download custom “fan made” campaigns on the official Fan Site of Dark Omen, as long with many other resources to expand even more your warhammer experience.

Be careful these fans seems to be STRONG Players and so their campaigns are even more challenging 😉

The difficulty i played on : There’s none to choose, it’s HARD !

How long is this game : If you’re Lucky 12 hours, and 18 hours if you’re not.

Would i recommend it to a friend ? : Yes but first he has to play to the frustrating SOTHR !

Did i pay for it ? : No 😉 (Thanks Emule)
